Substance Abuse Counseling

Substance abuse counselors advise people dealing with alcoholism or other types of addictions, such as to intoxicants or painkillers. Counselors evaluate clients' mental and physical health, addictive behaviors and openness to treatment, one of eight basic duties identified by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). On completing an evaluation, the counselor helps his client develop treatment and recovery plans, as well as identifying behaviors that interfere with both processes. Counselors also review and recommend treatment options to families and help them develop strategies to deal with a client's addiction problems.
